Yuwato Hirayama was the patriarch of his family and initially farmed in the Puʻukapu area of Waimea. In the early 1960s, Yuwato and his sons began farming in the Lālāmilo Farm Lots, thus establishing Y. Hirayama Farm Inc.
Today, the farm is operated by Yuwato’s sons, Royce and Nathan (third-generation brothers), along with their wives. Royce’s son, Stennis (fourth generation), has also joined the business. After 15 successful years as executive chef at Tommy Bahama, Mauna Lani, Stennis brings valuable experience from the culinary industry, offering insight into the importance of agriculture from both the farmer’s and the consumer’s perspective. The farm continues to produce head cabbage, romaine, and red and green leaf lettuce.
